LEEASA was formed by concerned industry individuals in 2003. The Association is concerned that this industry, which is inherently dangerous, could fall into disrepute if not well run and regulated. The engineering team providing the service should be well trained to the correct standards and be ethical and responsible for their actions. Safety should be paramount. Since the inception, LEEASA has grown and all Lifting machinery Inspectors (LMI) are encouraged to join.
The LIFTING EQUIPMENT ENGINEERING ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA (LEEASA) was formed by like-minded organisations and individuals from the providers, manufacturers, maintenance, inspection, examination and training sectors of this industry. The Association will endeavour to create a responsible forum where the collective voice of its members can be formulated and used in all forums where opinions and professional or practical consultation is requested either by government or controlling bodies or the public at large.
The Lifting Equipment Engineering Association of South Africa (LEEASA) is growing in size and recognition since our humble beginning some ten years ago and now has approximately 500 members.
In the period 2011 to 2014 LEEASA has on a continual basis engaged with Government and Statutory bodies to improve and regulate the lifting equipment industry in the interest of health and safety. The lifting equipment industry with its inherent dangers to the lives of our members and other users is of major concern to the association.
These tasks included nominating a member to serve on the technical committee who were re-writing the Driven Machinery Regulations (TCDMR). This was done and the work is apparently finalised. LEEASA also has members on the committees of the National Code of Practice (NCOP) and the re-write of the Construction Regulations (CR).
LEEASA continues to provide volunteers to serve on Technical Committees (TC’s) at the South African Bureau of Standards in the hope of improving the South African National Standards (SANS). Our members are all volunteers on these committees and are in continual dialogue regarding these regulations.
LEEASA contributed to writing levels 2, 3 and 4 qualifications for the vertical articulation career path to a Lifting Machinery Inspector (LMI). This will eventually lead to vertical articulation to the existing registered level 5 qualification for LMI’s as requested by the Department of Labour (DoL). All the required documentation was submitted to the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) who subsequently passed this on to the newly formed Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO), where progress is not yet evident.
LEEASA is the volutary association recognised by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), has nominated members to serve on some of the ECSA committees (working groups). Many members of the Lifting Machinery (LMI) ECSA registration committee are LEEASA members. We have two members who were accepted to serve on the ECSA Council.
LEEASA, through its voluntary active members, participates in all the processes it can where allowed and practical to do so.
The Association is concerned that the Lifting Industry, if not well run and regulated, could fall into disrepute. We insist that our members, while providing a service of the highest standards, should be well trained to the correct competencies and must at all times be ethical and responsible for their actions.
