RITZ Centrifugal Pumps Part 1

RITZ Centrifugal Pumps Part 1

Product News Wednesday, January 6, 2010: RITZ Pumps South Africa (Pty) Ltd

11-12 February 2010

RITZ Pumps South Africa is proud to offer this two day program aimed at giving delegates a sound working knowledge of the basic workings of centrifugal pumping systems. The content adopts a systems approach which highlights the roles played by the pump, pipes and valves in the overall efficiency of the installation.

Previous delegates who have attended this course have found it to be extremely practical and useful. All concepts covered are reinforced through the solution of case studies drawn from the course leader’s field experience.

Course Outline

1) A systems approach to pumping systems
⇒ The concepts Force, Work, Energy and Power
⇒ Introduction to Life Cycle Costing (LCC)
⇒ Power reduction strategies

2) Pump types and their applications
⇒ Centrifugal (including impeller types)
⇒ Positive displacement pumps (types and applications)
⇒ Progressing cavity and centrifugal curves compared
⇒ Multistage, end suction and horizontal split case pumps
⇒ Applications (slurry, petro-chemical, construction, mining, waste and potable water)
⇒ Introduction to specific speed 3) Sealing arrangements
⇒ Packed glands: features, benefits and drawbacks
⇒ Mechanical seals: Types and applications
⇒ Sealing LCC: A basic comparison between packed glands and mechanical seals

4) Bearings
⇒ Overview of the forces to be accommodated in a centrifugal pump
⇒ Bearing types: Features, benefits and applications 5) Duty Point calculations
⇒ The concepts pressure and head and their relationship
⇒ Ascertaining Static, friction (pipes and fittings) and pressure head
⇒ Calculating Total Dynamic Head (TDH)
⇒ The problems associated with non steady state TDH conditions

6)
⇒ Calculating TDH at varying flow rates
⇒ Plotting the System Head Curve
⇒ The significance of the shape of a System Head Curve
⇒ Overlaying the System Head Curve on a pumps performance curve

7) Pump curves
⇒ Head capacity curves
⇒ Impeller diameters
⇒ Variable speed curves
⇒ Efficiency
⇒ Power absorbed 8) NPSH and cavitation
⇒ Calculating NPSH available
⇒ Ascertaining NPSH required
⇒ Confirming the adequacy of a system’s NPSH

9) Trouble shooting pump systems

⇒ Instrumentation required for effective information systems
⇒ Basic electrics for pumping systems ⇒ Determination of the root cause of faults in pumping systems
⇒ Remediation processes

Venue: The RITZ Knowledge Centre 5a Patrick Road, Jet Park Boksburg
Course fees: R 4 500.00
Course duration: 2 days 11-12 February 2010

The course leader has over 35 years exposure to the pumps, pipes and valve markets. This experience is put to good use through the inclusion of appropriate case studies which are based on real life experiences. Delegates should ensure that they have access to a calculator and a ruler during the two days.
