New Actuator Combines Small Size, Long Stroke and Built-in Position Sensor in Cost-Effective Package

VISTA, Calif., − May 28, 2015 – BEI Kimco Magnetics has announced another small sized Voice Coil Actuator (VCA) solution for design engineers, expanding upon their continuing commitment to new product development and customization to meet unique product needs.  The new LAS13-54-001Z Linear Housed Voice Coil Actuator features an integral built-in position sensor and moving magnet design with resolution and force attributes that can accommodate many applications – both size and price are surprisingly small given the performance functions.

The new actuator measures only 5.4” in length with a thin 0.75” diameter over the main body and a 1.3” diameter over the lead wire exit end.  The 0.5” stroke device delivers a peak force of 6.0 lbs. and 20 microns (0.00079”) of resolution while weighing only 0.373 lbs.  The tapered styling and size work exceedingly well for medical hand tools and other delicate instrumentation, as well as for remotely controlled circuit breakers and industrial automation applications.

“With a resolution of 20 microns, this actuator meets accuracy requirements for many applications at a price that is very economical” says Jim McNamara, BEI Kimco Senior Applications Engineer.  “High resolution sensors can be very expensive, and we often encounter applications where submicron position accuracy is just not needed. The LAS13-54-001Z offers good performance that is more than ample for many applications.”

The new VCA includes all the inherent advantages of moving magnet technology, which features no moving wires and excellent heat dissipation, while providing moderate speed with controllable, gentle stop points.  The integrated position feedback sensor eliminates the need for OEMs to add any mechanical parts, simplifying customer inventory, production and installation.  And, its voice coil technology offers direct-drive, zero backlash and cog free operation for accurate motion as well as high acceleration and absence of commutation.

With this latest addition to the line, BEI Kimco’s linear actuators with built-in sensors now have strokes of 0.25”, 0.5”, 1.0” and 1.25”.  Compared to the two closest products in the family, this unit has a longer stroke than two actuators larger in size.  And, with its thinner, longer package design, it fits specific space needs other actuators cannot.
