DETECTION OF DRY RUN CONDITIONS ON SMALL kW MOTORS
Product News Sunday, May 31, 2015: NewElec (Pty) Ltd
NewElec’s KE motor protection relay and free issue software combine to provide a protection, motor management and control platform for motors used in conjunction with fans, pumps, conveyors, crushers and compressors. The relays offer drive power measurement to assist in pump efficiency and plant energy management programs. To assist maintenance personnel with fault finding, the relays include both fault and events records on a rotating buffer with time and date stamping.
Using the KE or KD motor protection relays the user may select his preferred dry-run detection method. He/she has a choice between dry run detection by current OR power factor measurements. The latter choice typically more attuned to difficult circumstances in being able to measure very small current changes due to low kW motors, pumps driven by pulleys or difficult medium pumped where spurious current measurements are influenced by gasses or temperature fluctuations causing nuisance trips.
The thermal overload curves are adjustable Class 5 to 40 sec. Earth leakage and earth fault protection features are available with appropriate and distinguishing latched LED fault displays. The earth leakage trip sensitivity threshold can be set in the range 30 to 1 000 mA. The curve may be set for instantaneous (trip delay settings 100 ms to 1 s) or IDMT. Incorporated into this is harmonics filtering allowing for far less nuisance trips when used with VSDs or high inrush currents. Even more protection is made available by adding an optional earth insulation lockout module that prevents starting of the motor when the windings are contaminated.
The free software includes a real time recorder, a simulator for training staff, and a motor protection elements non-conventional calculator not found in competing products.
The KE relay range is designed for chassis mounting but has an MMI for door mounting. It may be used directly (has integrated built-in CTs) up to 50 A and may be used with interposing current transformers to cover any motor load.
