Bio-Chemical (BC) Filter Housing
Product News Friday, November 26, 2010: Nicro Industrial (Pty) Ltd
At Nicro Design, we have recently been busy with a few interesting projects. One of these projects is a BC (Bio-Chemical) filter housing designed for a warship that prevents biochemical gases from entering the ship’s air-conditioning system.
During the design of the filter housing we conducted a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis on the housing through the specially designed filters with impregnated carbon and a specially developed heppa filter paper. We designed; 3-D modelled and created detailed drawings for the manufacturing process.
The stainless BC filter housing has a water deflector plate to separate spray water from air. From there the air is passed through the primary filter, before travelling through a series of baffle plates to remove excess moisture. The air then goes through a heater element box where the air is heated above ambient temperature to dry. The air then passes through a secondary dust filter where it flows through three stainless BC filters then out into the air-conditioning duct in the warship. We integrated an inflatable seal to seal the door. Probes that monitor the air temperature prevent the BC filter housing to feed information to the ships PLC system.
The warship will each take sixteen filter housings that have three cylindrical BC filter in. Currently the filters are being tested at a facility in Pretoria (Protechnik Laboratories) and the filter housing is in Simons Town for its final testing.
The role played by the Nicro Group is fast becoming an important part of engineering solutions.
