Selecting an optimum lens for your camera or sensor

Selecting an optimum lens for your camera or sensor

Service News Thursday, February 13, 2025: Resolve Optics Ltd.

Resolve Optics has written a white paper which discusses the key considerations when selecting a lens to get optimum performance from your camera or sensor.

The ability of a lens to resolve detail is not only determined by its quality but also is ultimately limited by diffraction. It is commonly thought that the resolution of a lens should match or exceed the Nyquist resolution of the sensor that it has been selected to work with, to achieve optimum performance. This is a common misconception.
The white paper discusses and explains design considerations such as ‘What is the Nyquist resolution of your sensor and why is it important’, ‘How lens resolution can be affected by Moiré and aliasing affects’ and ‘Why a digital sensor can only sample an analogue signal that is half its Nyquist sample rate’.   For further information please visit https://www.resolveoptics.com/articles-and-white-papers/ to download the white paper ‘Sensor Resolution versus Lens Resolution’. To discuss development of a custom lens to improve the performance of your image intensifier please contact Resolve Optics on +44-1494-777100 / sales@resolveoptics.com.   Over the last 25+ years, Resolve Optics has developed a customer centric approach to specialist lens design, development, and supply. Each year the company delivers thousands of custom lens assemblies – from complex high-speed imaging optics and material sorting inspection lenses, to radiation resistant lenses for critical nuclear and space applications. The company prides itself on quickly translating each customer need into an optimised optical design, running projects successfully, and manufacturing production quantities of lenses or optical products on time, to the specified quality and target price.   Image caption: How lens design can affect image contrast   ----------- Worldwide HQ Resolve Optics Ltd.
