ASSMANG BKM Khumani Iron Ore mine located in Kathu, Northern Cape, South Africa required that the advanced co polymer emulsified base stabilizer provided exclusively by Soil & Dust Solutions undergo extensive on site testing before being awarded the construction contract for the mine haul road and at a later stage the construction of the Crusher Platform, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Technical Director of Soil & Dust Solutions worked together with consulting engineers DRA, AFRICON, and the team at ASSMANG, as well as Geostrada ( a SANAS accredited laboratory) in order to develop 6 different mix designs using different application rates of our emulsified base stabilizer, in-situ soil and aggregate material.

MMLS tests were conducted by RoadLab Pty LImited, these tests simulate 100,000 wheel cycles at a specific weight. No other soil stabilizer has ever completed the entire test cycle, let alone complete the test without any sign of wear, as did the Soil Stabiilzer provided by Soil & Dust Solutions.

The results included the following:
Final Density Tests exceeded the minimum 98% and yielded an average of density in excess of 98% Modified AASHTO density.
The UCS – Unconfined Compressive Strength exceeded the minimum 2.0 Mpa and yielded an average of 3.117 Mpa
The ITS – Indirect Tensile Strength exceeded the minimum 250 Kpa at 100% compaction and yielded an average of 765 Kpa.

These unprecedented high performance results using a soil stabilizer and not cement resulted in a cost effective mix design with a superior wearing course and a dust free surface.
